The Sonoma Community Center is accepting submissions for its Trashion Fashion Show, now until Feb. 27.

Coming on the heels of the show’s success last spring, the fifth annual Trashion Fashion Show is anticipating an even higher volume of participants and attendees for Sonoma’s only live runway fashion show featuring wearable art made from recycled materials and cast-off junk.

Winners are chosen by a panel of qualified judges and are awarded cash prizes.

The Trashion Fashion Show was conceived by the Sonoma Community Center as a way to highlight its sustainability programs, which focus on education around topics like water conservation and recycling.

The upcoming Trashion Fashion Show will be held on Saturday, April 18, at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building. Sponsors include Sonoma Market, Republic of Thrift and Sonoma Garbage Collectors Inc.

All levels of experience are encouraged to submit a design, and for those who are interested in improving their fashion design skills, the Sonoma Community Center will offer a four-week class in Trashion Fashion design prior to the submission deadline. SCC Special Projects Manager, Margaret Hatcher, will teach the class. With more and 20 years experience as a costume designer working with unusual materials, Margaret can help someone realize their vision.

The Sonoma Plein Air Foundation is a partner with Sonoma Community Center, providing scholarships for 10 children to attend the Center’s Trashion Fashion workshops in the months leading up to the show. The children, who are part of the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, will work with their mentors to create submissions, which will then be modeled at the Trashion Fashion Show.

Groups and individuals ages 9 and up are encouraged to submit their preliminary designs for a piece of wearable art made from made from recycled materials or cast-off junk. Designs must be completed by March 23.
