Edgar L. Lowe Jr.

Edgar L. Lowe Jr., 80, passed away at his home in Sonoma on July 20, 2014, surrounded by his adoring family.

Born Nov. 8, 1933, in Ontario, Ed attended USC, where he was a member of the National Honor Fraternity Blue Key, and graduated with a BS degree in business administration. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant. He and his former wife, Darlene, lived in Moraga, where they raised their children, David Lowe, of Danville, and Alan Lowe, of Alamo. Ed joined the firm of Hambrecht & Quist and became their most successful institutional stockbroker for nearly all his 30 years there.

In 1994, Ed married Susan Singer. He loved her very much and was a devoted and considerate husband. They were true partners who shared wonderful times together.

To Ed, family was everything. He was a wonderful father to his sons, and a loving mentor to his six grandchildren: Allie, Gregory and Stephanie (David and Connie) and Trevor, Kevin and Scott (Alan and Julie). He instilled his values in them and gave them important life lessons. They loved him, and miss him very much.

When Ed retired, his mantra was “now it’s time for me to give back.” His belief in the value of education led to his commitment to Students Rising Above, a Bay Area-wide college scholarship and advising program. In recognition of Ed’s outstanding contributions, SRA created the Ed and Susan Lowe Named Scholarship.

In Sonoma, Ed joined the board of the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation. He devoted his efforts to the establishment of much-needed pre-schools. Through his generous support, two new pre-schools were opened. His commitment is recognized on a plaque at the Sassarini School Preschool Classroom.

Ed’s greatest happiness came from helping others – whether it was making wise investments for his friends so their kids could go to college, generously helping underserved students achieve their dreams, or just being a good friend to his community. He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, Ed would surely appreciate donations to The Ed and Susan Lowe Scholarship Fund, Students Rising Above, P.O. Box 29174, San Francisco, CA 94129, or the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation, P. O. Box 493, Sonoma, CA 95476.
