Dragons scrimmage on grid road tonight

The 2014 fall season is in full session with daily workouts and preparations for the action to begin for seven Sonoma Valley High School sports programs, including football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ cross-country, boys’ and girls’ water polo and girls’ tennis and golf.

First up on the competitive schedule are the football Dragons,

who hit the road tonight for their annual 7:30 p.m. preseason scrimmage with Santa Rosa at the Panthers’ Ernie Nevers Field.

The Sonoma gridders open their regular season hosting Galena from Reno on Friday, Sept. 5, at Arnold Field.

Sonoma’s volleyball girls are currently scrimmaging and the defending Sonoma County League champions will start their season on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when they host longtime rival powerhouse Maria Carrillo in Pfeiffer Gym.

The co-defending SCL champion Dragon soccer boys kick off their season on the road Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m. against Justin-Siena in Napa, with their first home match at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, when they host Drake on the high school field

Sonoma’s soccer girls begin their season on the road at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Santa Rosa, with their first home match at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they host nationally ranked power Maria Carrillo at the high school field.

The Dragon cross-country boys and girls teams will start their season on Wednesday, Sept. 3, by hosting their annual Alumni Meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Maxwell Farms Regional Park course.

Sonoma’s tennis girls – who are holding a benefit car wash and bake sale on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sonoma Chevrelot – open their SCL season Tuesday, Sept. 9, against El Molino in Forestville, with their first SCL home match at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, when they host Piner at the high school courts.

The Dragon boys and girls water polo teams begin their season facing Cardinal Newman at the Finley Aquatic Complex in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with their first home matches slated for Thursday, Oct. 2, when they host San Marin at the Sonoma Aquatic Center’s pool.

Sonoma’s girl golfers start their SCL season on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Petaluma, with their first league home match at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, when they host El Molino at the Sonoma Golf Club course.
