Dragon soccer squads sweep El Mo

Sonoma boys host 'Hounds in finale today; teams await NCS seeding|

Battling into the final week of the Sonoma County League season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys posted their eighth win in 11 matches, while the girls ended their SCL campaign with a comeback road victory that earned them an upbeat third-place finish.

Before Wednesday night’s SCL boys home clash with El Molino under the Arnold Field lights, Sonoma honored its 12 seniors, including Eduardo Barajas, Jorge Ivan Escobar, Moises Farias, Victor Fernandez, Erik Figueroa, Gustavo Gomez, Eduardo Hernandez, David Lopez, Leo Angel Macedonio, Teodoro Magaña, Edwin Reyes and Marcos Vicente.

Then the match began and the Dragons dominated the action from the whistle, opening up a 2-0 halftime advantage before deploying a three-goal second-half offensive surge and an unyielding defensive effort that left El Molino in their wake en route to their 5-0 shutout victory.

Leading Sonoma past the visiting Lions were juniors Diego Larios and Freddy Ramírez’s one goal and one assist each; a goal apiece by Farias, Reyes and junior Beto Zaragoza; and Lopez and junior Roberto Nápoles’ one assist each.

The Dragon boys end their SCL season hosting Healdsburg in a rescheduled match at 4 p.m. today at the high school field.

Having already secured third place in the SCL, Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls found themselves trailing El Molino 1-0 in Forestville last Tuesday, but then put on the defensive clamps, stepped up their offensive pace and rallied back for a 3-1 triumph and an impressive 8-3-1 final league record.

Leading the Lady Dragon with a goal each were juniors Lorne Baskin and Alanna Johnston, and freshman Vanessa Ramirez, and senior Mia Vanoni and junior Lena Mallett added an assist apiece.

Both the Sonoma soccer boys and girls teams await their postseason fate with Sunday’s North Coast Section seeding meeting as the NCS playoffs begin next week.
