While the varsity basketball teams are playing their packed preseason nonleague schedules, Sonoma Valley High School’s junior varsity and freshman hoops squads are also staying busy with plenty of nonleague on-court action.
Sonoma’s jayvee hoops girls, coached by Jann Thorpe, used a late fourth-quarter rally to upend a good visiting Napa team 43-39 before competing in last weekend’s Pittsburg Jayvee Tournament, where they posted a 2-1 fourth-place record with sophomores Renee O'Donnell and Emma Stanfield earning all-tourney honors.
After dropping the Pittsburg tournament opener 80-52 to strong St. Mary’s, the Lady Dragons beat Dougherty Valley 62-47 and Deer Valley 42-23, before playing Tuesday evening in Lafayette, where they nipped Acalanes 37-36.
Leading the Sonoma jayvee girls to their win over Napa were sophomore Jenny Eggers’ 16 points, frosh Grace Cutting’s seven, O’Donnell’s four and two each by Stanfield, sophomore Rocky Darnell and frosh Alanna Johnston.
The Lady Dragons were first led past Dougherty Valley by Eggers’ 13 points, Johnston’s 12, sophomore Sami Von Gober’s 11, O’Donnell’s 10, Cutting’s four, frosh Kayla Field and Katie Stovall’s two apiece, and Darnell and Stanfield’s one each; then topped Deer Valley behind O’Donnell and Cutting’s seven points apiece, Eggers and Johnston’s six each, Von Gober’s five, Field’s three and Stanfield and sophomore Annie Greenslade’s two apiece.
Pacing Sonoma in its loss to St. Mary’s were Eggers’ 14 points, O’Donnell’s 11, Von Gober’s 10, Field’s six, Cutting’s five, Stanfield’s four and Johnston’s two.
The Lady Dragons were led past Acalanes by Eggers’ 14 points, O’Donnell’s nine, Von Gober’s seven, Field’s three and Cutting’s and Stovall’s two each.

Sonoma’s jayvee hoops boys dropped a 57-37 road decision to Hayward last Saturday, then fell to visiting San Marin 53-35 on Tuesday.
The Dragons were paced against Hayward by sophomore Kevin Hurtado’s nine points, sophomore Miles Pimentel’s eight, sophomore Edwin Reyes’ seven, sophomore Joe Peterson’s five, sophomore Austin Chapin’s four and sophomores Max Yankovich and Freddie Padilla’s two apiece.
Pacing the Sonoma jayvees in their loss to San Marin were Yankovich’s eight points, Hurtado’s seven, Reyes’ six, Chapin and Pimentel’s four each, and two apiece by Padilla and sophomores Spencer McNairy and Travis Claeys.

With only three of their six Sonoma County League opponents fielding freshman teams, the bulk of Sonoma’s frosh hoops girls’ 2013-14 schedule is being played this month, which has made for a busy two weeks that saw them play eight games, including six contests in two tournaments.
The frosh Lady Dragons, coached by Mark Burningham, opened their campaign playing the Division-1-heavy Pittsburg Tourney, where they dropped 34-8 and 36-25 decisions to Liberty and Hayward, respectively, before routing host Pittsburg 33-12, with Brianna Gorman and Maddie Cashel earning all-tourney honors.
The Sonoma frosh girls then lost a 23-22 heartbreaker to Drake on a late three-pointer, before beating Napa 37-25 behind Shelby Decker’s 10 points; Quinn Cordero’s eight points, four rebounds and two steals; Gorman’s four points, 11 rebounds and two steals; Belen Fonseca’s four points and six rebounds; Sydney Moore’s two points and six rebounds; and Cashel’s two points.
In the close loss to Drake, Sonoma was paced Gorman’s eight points and seven rebounds; Bella Fanucchi’s four points and three steals; and Georgi and Anita Scheiblich’s four points each.
The Lady Dragons competed in the annual Henri Salatte Memorial Freshman Tournament at Rancho Cotate and won two-of-three games en route to capturing the tourney’s consolation championship, with Gorman again receiving all-tourney honors.
In the consolation championship game, the Sonoma girls defeated St. Vincent’s (Petaluma) 29-10, led by Emily Greenslade’s seven points and five rebounds; Fanucchi’s five points and three steals; Cashel and Quinn Cordero’s four points and five rebounds each; Gorman and Moore’s two points and eight rebounds apiece; Decker’s two points and three assists; and Anita Scheiblich’s one point.
Leading the Lady Dragons to their 31-14 victory over Windsor were Gorman’s nine points and eight rebounds; Cashel’s six points and seven rebounds; Cordero’s four points and eight rebounds; Decker’s four points and five rebounds; Anita Scheiblich’s three points; and Fonseca’s two points and five rebounds.
Sonoma was paced in its 44-19 loss to Montgomery by Gorman’s seven points and 10 rebounds; Greenslade’s four points; and two points each by Fonseca, Cashel, Decker and Georgi Scheiblich.

Sonoma’s frosh hoops boys dropped a 59-40 decision to visiting San Marin on Tuesday as Eric Bailey posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Rounding out the frosh boy Dragons’ roster, coached by Jon Sevenau, are McGuire Flaherty, Japhy Koch, Nazir Lyle, Miles Marsh, Campbell Martin, Colton Mertens, Shane O'Malley, Jordan Randuch, Luke Severson and Andrew Toovey.
