Junior wide receiver Tristan Mertens caught three touchdown passes and senior quarterback Dan Deely scored two more on the ground as the Sonoma Valley High Dragons came back from a 21-7 deficit Saturday and beat Piner 32-30.

The Dragons were down 21-7 in the third quarter before Deely scampered in to make it 21-14.

Sonoma scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to take a 32-21 lead. But Piner hit a field goal with 1:16 to play and then recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left to make it a 32-30 game. The Pioneers failed on the two-point conversion and tried another onside kick. This time the Dragons recovered and the game was over.

The Dragons are now 4-2 overall, and 1-1 in SCL play. Sonoma entertains Healdsburg on Friday in the Dragons’ homecoming game.
