Dragon grapplers topple Piner

Coming off earning a tie-breaking Sonoma County League dual match 37-36 triumph after multiple criteria had to be used to decide the winner, the defending champion Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestlers didn’t have to endure as much drama as they did in Petaluma last week to capture another victory.

The Dragons, who are close to full strength after dealing with the flu bug in recent weeks, traveled to Santa Rosa Wednesday evening and toppled Piner 43-21 in their SCL dual match.

With the win over the Prospectors – individual results weren’t available at presstime – the Sonoma grapplers improved their SCL third-place dual-match record to 3-2 and will wrap up the regular season by hosting Elsie Allen in the finale, which is also senior night, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Golton Hall.

A small contingent of Dragons recently wrestled in the two weekend tournaments, including the highly competitive Tim Brown Invitational at the Jackson Sports Academy on the McClellan Air Force Base outside of Sacramento.

Pacing Sonoma in the Tim Brown event were senior co-captain Harris Meglen's standout top-20 finish with a 3-2 record at 122 pounds; senior co-captain Max Schimm's 2-2 at 154; freshman Noah Bartolome’s 1-2 at 147; junior Jack Biaggi’s 0-2 at 160; and sophomore Brandon Ruiz’s 0-2 at 170.

At the Rodgriguez-hosted Lou Encalada Invitational in Fairfield, the Dragons were paced by Schimm’s upbeat fifth-place finish with a 5-1 record at 147 pounds; Bartolome’s 1-2 at 140; sophomore Austin Beltran's 1-2 at 170; and frosh Maclain Goertzen's 1-2 at 122.
