Dragon boys host San Marin tonight

In their 2013-14 season home opener, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys will tip off against a perennially strong nonleague San Marin team at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Pfeiffer Gym, preceded by the freshmen starting at 4:30 and the junior varsity playing at 6.

The Dragons then return to the nonleague road for a game at Mt. Diablo this Thursday, Dec. 12, before returning home to host Terra Linda on Friday, Dec. 20.

Over the weekend, the Sonoma varsity boys took a hoops trip to Clear Lake to compete in the Kelseyville-hosted Stokes Tournament and faced opponents from three widespread Northern California locations.

After falling 67-58 in the first round to a Colusa team that would eventually reach the tourney final, the Dragons bounced back in Friday’s loser’s bracket to defeat Woodside 48-36 and reach Saturday’s consolation championship game, where they stayed on the heels of South Fork for three quarters.

Unfortunately, Sonoma ended up falling short in its quest for the consolation title by dropping a 49-38 decision.

Earning all-tourney honors for the Sonoma boys was  senior Jack Murphy.

Pacing the Dragons in their consolation-title loss to South Fork were Murphy’s 14 points; junior Ryan Wilbanks’ seven points; senior Vinny Albano’s six points and two steals; senior Jesse Summers’ five points; junior Alex Gustafson’s four points and three assists; and junior Cyle Gusse’s two points and nine rebounds.

Results of the Colusa and Woodside games weren’t available at presstime.
