After their Foundation Game debut, which didn’t count toward their record, the Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity basketball boys officially put their 2013-14 season into play with nonleague games in Ukiah last Wednesday evening and at Albany Saturday night.

Unfortunately, the Dragons couldn’t return home with a win for their efforts, being edged 45-41 in Ukiah after missing a shot to tie the game with 26 seconds remaining, and then dropping a 57-39 decision to Albany.

Sonoma was paced against Ukiah by senior Jesse Summers’ 15 points and four rebounds; junior Noe Baron’s eight rebounds and strong defense; junior Cyle Gusse’s seven points and three rebounds; and senior Vinny Albano’s seven points, junior Alex Gustafson’s six and junior Ryan Wilbanks’ four.

Pacing the Dragons in their loss to Albany were Summers’ 16 points, senior Andy Chavez’s six, Albano and senior Jack Murphy’s five each, Wilbanks’ four and junior Tristan Mertens’ three.

The Sonoma boys will next compete in the Kelseyville hosted Stokes Tournament taking place this Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 5 to 7, before returning home to host nonleague San Marin next Tuesday, Dec. 10.
