Another 48 days of drag-racing action will light up the Valley’s world-famous drag strip, considered one of the quickest and fastest in the country, at Sonoma Raceway during its coming 2014 Big O Tires racing season, highlighted by the return of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series in July.

Taking Sonoma Raceway’s center stage will be the 27th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals weekend, which features racing in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, and takes place July 25 through 27.

Preceding the NHRA Sonoma Nationals Valley weekend will be the July 18 to 20 NHRA Division 7 Drag Races, presented by Korbel and including the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, with nearly 400 sportsman racers, as well as the six-second door slammers of the West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified Series.

Sonoma Raceway will also host two annual programs for drag racing fans: the Summit ET Bracket Drag Racing Series and the raceway’s popular Wednesday Night Drags program, which enters its 27th season in 2014.

The 13-race Summit ET Bracket Drag Racing Series season kicks off on Jan. 5, while the Wednesday Night Drags run from March 5 to Nov. 12, and include the popular “Top the Cops,” which runs from April through August and gives high school students the opportunity to drag race against local law enforcement officers.

Along with the NHRA and other drag racing weekends, Sonoma Raceway’s 2014 major events schedule also includes historic car racing again opening and closing the Valley season with the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival on May 17 and 18, and the Oct. 4 and 5 Classic Sports Racing Group Charity Challenge.

The popular NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 weekend takes place Friday through Sunday, June 20 to 22, with the IndyCar Series, featuring the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, taking place the weekend of Aug. 22 through 24.

The final summer major event is the third consecutive appearance of the FIA World Touring Car Championship from Sept. 20 to 21.

Sonoma Raceway was the scene for the season finale of one of the world’s most unique endurance races, the annual 24 Hours of LeMons, which took place Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8, and featured endurance racing for $500 cars.

A portion of the proceeds from the event benefitted Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway.
