Do gangs rule?

Editor, Index-Tribune:

A few weeks ago, the police broke up a gang fight in the parking lot of a bar. The gang scattered and came down to the Plaza and caused two bars on the Plaza to close for a few hours. Then they started in the Plaza during “the city party” and broke the jaw of a young man.

I haven’t seen a single word in the paper or police report.

I hope this is not an indication that the gangs have taken over.

(Editor’s note: This anonymous letter was published to clarify the public record. On the night of the City Party, the first bar referenced in the letter – not on the Plaza - was closed by management after a fight broke out. Police were not involved. One of the antagonists involved in the first bar fight was later attacked at a Plaza bar and his jaw was broken, according to the police report. The assailant was charged with felony battery, and the bar involved shut down early. The Index-Tribune reported on this series of incidents in its police report in the issue of Aug. 5. To our knowledge, no other bar was shut down that night, and no criminal street gangs were identified by police as being involved.)
