A 25-year-old Sonoma Valley man died following a fight with a 19-year-old suspect in Agua Caliente near the Valley of the Moon Teen Center Friday evening.

According to Sonoma Police Chief Bret Sackett, Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the Teen Center, along with medical personnel, on the report of a fight at about 5:30 p.m. Friday. Upon arrival, they found paramedics from the Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue Authority performing life support measures on the victim. The victim was transported to Sonoma Valley Hospital where life support measures continued until he was declared dead at approximately 7 p.m.

The victim was later identified as Mario Zamudio Perez, from Sonoma Valley.

Police reports indicate that no weapons were involved in the fight and that the victim may have died following a blow to the head, after which he may have hit his head on the ground.

Police said late Friday night that no motive had been established for the crime but that the suspect, Joshua Javier Gonzalez, age 19, also from Sonoma Valley, had been located and taken into custody. An autopsy is scheduled for next week to determine the manner and cause of death.

Gonzalez was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility for involuntary manslaughter. He is currently being held on $25,000 bail while awaiting arraignment. Sackett said there was no evidence the fight was gang-related or that the suspect knew the victim.

Sackett added that an investigation of the crime by detectives from the Sheriff’s Violent Crime Investigations and Crime Scene Investigations units was still underway, and he confirmed that the fight took place near the Teen Center but that the Teen Center was, itself, not a factor in the incident.
