The Verizon IndyCar Series weekend has arrived at Sonoma Raceway, with practice, qualifying and racing taking place today and tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 23, followed by the featured race event, the 10th annual GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, being held Sunday, Aug. 24.
Returning to Sonoma’s world famous 12-turn, 2.38-mile road course to defend his title is three-time Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma champion Australian Will Power, who will be driving for Team Penske and is the first repeat IndyCar winner in Sonoma, with back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011.
With Power, who is the current IndyCar point-standings leader, there are six drivers who remain mathematically eligible to win the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series title, including teammates Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya (Team Penske); Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports); Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosports); and Scott Dixon (Target Chip Ganassi Racing), who is last year’s Indy series champion.
The Indy weekend also includes the Mazda Road to Indy program, highlighted by the Pirelli World Challenge, and the Indy Lights and Cooper Tires USF2000 races.
General tickets for the Verizon IndyCar Series GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma weekend start at $39, and, for the second straight year, kids ages 12-years-old and-under accompanying their parents will be admitted free.
