The importance of testosterone

Editor, Index-Tribune:

While editorializing about some violent incidents that took place during Sonoma’s 4th of July celebration (“Alcohol-fueled Fourth,” July 15), Index-Tribune editor David Bolling wrote, “The testosterone was still flowing...” while describing such incidents.

This sexist belief that males are poisoned by testosterone has been popularized by male and female feminists for decades. The only problem is that it’s based on misandry not science, as it assumes that men and boys with more masculine traits have more negative traits than they would otherwise have. The term capitalizes on the perception that masculinity is controlled by the androgen testosterone.

While testosterone is a sex and aggression hormone, it’s sad that misandrist journalists like Bolling cannot distinguish between aggression and violence.

Indeed, Bolling would never refer to women as a group as being “hysterical,” which is the female equivalent (originally regarded as a female-only condition to negatively stereotype them) of the negative stereotype of males being poisoned by testosterone.
