NASCAR weekend begins at Sonoma Raceway

The Valley’s most attended motorsports event has arrived, and the action is underway at Sonoma Raceway, as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series makes its 26th annual stop with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 weekend taking place today and running through tomorrow, Saturday, June 21, before concluding Sunday, June 22.

Defending champion Martin Truex Jr., who was the ninth different Toyota/Save Mart 350 winner in as many years, will attempt to repeat last year’s achievement on the famous 12-turn, 2.52-mile Valley road course and join the impressive list of former multi-winners at Sonoma Raceway.

With Vallejo’s Jeff Gordon alone atop the group of Sonoma champions with five titles (1998-2000, ’04, ’06), a Truex Jr. victory on Sunday would make him a double NASCAR winner along with Rusty Wallace (1990, ’96), Ernie Irvan (1992, ’94), Ricky Rudd (1989, 2002) and Tony Stewart (2001, ’05).

The Saturday on-track schedule includes the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West 200 (64 laps, 127.36 miles) race (12:30 p.m.), and the Lean1 Pole Day NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying, televised on Fox Sports 1.
