In May, Creekside High School selected recent graduates Yajaira Marin and Kaylene Barber as its Students of the Year.
Student of the Year Yajaira Marin is described by her teachers as a charismatic problem-solver with visible leadership qualities. Marin came to Creekside in August 2012 and completed her graduation requirements in December 2013. During her time at Creekside, she was known for having a great sense of humor and being a wonderful friend to all. She has persevered and overcome many obstacles in her life with grace, dignity and poise. Her friends know her to be energetic, strong and courageous. She plans to attend Santa Rosa Junior College in the fall, with the hope of becoming a social worker. Her senior project was focused on the reunification of families, a subject very close to her heart.
Kaylene Barber began her student career at Creekside in October 2012 and completed her graduation requirements in December 2013. Barber was chosen as Student of the Year because of her continuous effort and dedication to self-improvement. She has remained focused on her education despite serious health issues.
She is currently enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College while also holding down a full-time job as a manager at McDonald’s in Sonoma, where she employs a number of her friends. Barber is an ambitious young woman who has the drive to succeed. Her senior project at Creekside was focused on becoming an emergency medical technician, a goal that her teachers feel confident she can achieve.
Barber is described as a resilient, team player, who is kind, strong and focused. Her contagious laughter and take-charge attitude will be missed at Creekside.
Congratulations to these hardworking and inspiring young students on their honor and to their families and teachers for encouraging their academic and personal success.
