It was a pitcher-perfect Tuesday for the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys and softball girls’ teams, who both got dominating mound performances from senior Jimmy Flatt and junior Hannah Herrick, respectively, in posting 10-run-rule shutout Sonoma County League road wins.
Herrick pitched a five-inning no-hitter for the second straight game following freshman teammate Hayden Pearce’s five-inning no-hit gem, as the Lady Dragons got a power-hitting effort from senior Amber Rose and registered a 10-0 SCL triumph at Healdsburg.
Along with Rose, who belted two triples and a double to go with three runs scored and an RBI, Sonoma was led by junior Autumn McElroy’s triple, single and two runs; senior Michelle Stovall’s two singles, two RBIs and two runs; senior Samantha Richards’ double, two RBIs and a run; Pearce’s triple, RBI and run; senior Lindsey Rocha’s RBI and run; and junior Shawny McVeigh and frosh Katie Stovall’s run each.
The Lady Dragons played at front-running defending champion Petaluma yesterday, with the results not available at presstime.
Following last Friday’s league rainout, Sonoma’s varsity baseball boys faced a three-game SCL week, which they got off to an upbeat start Tuesday in Santa Rosa with an 11-0, five-inning, 10-run-rule shutout victory over Piner, as Flatt pitched a three-hitter.
In Wednesday’s rained-out SCL make-up game at Arnold Field, the showdown of longtime rivals remained scoreless until Petaluma broke through for three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
But in the bottom of the sixth the Dragons answered with a three-spot of their own, two of the runs scoring on one wild pitch accompanied by an errant throw.
Unfortunately, the visiting Trojans broke the short-lived tie with a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the seventh frame, which, this time, Sonoma couldn’t match and ended up dropping a 5-3 decision.
Leading the Dragons past Piner were junior CJ Vitale and sophomore Spencer McNairy’s two-for-two, including a double, one RBI and one run scored each; senior Jack Murphy’s two-for-three with a double; Flatt and senior Mitch Hood’s single, two RBIs and one run apiece; junior Graham Herder’s double and two RBIs; senior Vince Albano’s single, RBI and run; sophomore MacLean Meyn’s single and two runs; senior Dan Deely’s two runs; and senior Ronnie Cotter’s run.
In their loss to Petaluma, the Sonoma boys were paced by Hood and Vitale’s two singles each; Murphy’s single and RBI; Herder’s double; and junior Kyle Dunevent and freshman Carson Snyder’s run apiece.
The Dragons will wrap up their SCL three-game week hosting Healdsburg in their home finale and senior night at 7 p.m. today under the Arnold Field lights.
On Tuesday, May 6, the Dragon boys play their regular-season finale in Forestville against El Molino.
Sonoma will then hold its annual alumni game at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at Arnold Field.
