Schools benefit from ‘Cinco’ tamale cookoff

The second annual Cinco de Mayo Festival and Tamale Cookoff returns to Cornerstone Sonoma from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4.

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $18,000 for Sonoma Valley schools and drew more than 1,000 attendees from Sonoma, Napa, Marin and San Francisco counties. The annual fundraiser is organized by parent volunteers to support schools throughout Sonoma Valley.

Cinco de Mayo festivities include live music, traditional Mexican folk dancing, children’s activities and a raffle. The tamale cookoff starts at 11 a.m., with a panel of local celebrity judges selecting the winners of “Sonoma’s Best Tamale of 2014.”

Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 3 to 12. They can be purchased online at cincodemayosonoma.com, or in Sonoma at Readers’ Books, Pharmaca and at several schools.

Tamale entries are still being accepted. Entry fee is $50, and entrants get a free ticket to the festival. For details or to register, visit cincodemayosonoma.com or email team@ cincodemayosonoma.com.
