Grabbing a quick lead in Tuesday’s crucial Sonoma County League showdown in Sebastopol, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity baseball boys were suddenly tied, then trailed defending champion Analy by three runs until the fifth and sixth innings.
In the top of the fifth, the visiting Dragons rallied for a pair of runs and then touched the plate in the sixth frame to tie Analy. After both teams failed to score in the seventh, the clash went into extra innings.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be only one extra frame when Sonoma was held scoreless in the top of the eighth, while the Tigers managed to remain unbeaten in SCL play by scoring in the bottom of the inning to pull out a 5-4 victory and sweep the two-game regular season series.
Pacing the Dragons were senior Vince Albano’s two-for-four, including a double and two runs scored; senior Jack Murphy’s two-for-four with one run; junior CJ Vitale’s one-for-four with two RBIs; junior Graham Herder’s double; senior Dan Deely and sophomore Spencer McNairy’s RBI each; and freshman Carson Snyder’s run.
Sonoma’s third-place diamond boys will host another longtime SCL rival in second-place Petaluma at 7 p.m. tonight under the Arnold Field lights, before traveling to Santa Rosa for a Tuesday afternoon game against league foe Piner.
