A two-car accident, in which both vehicles were overturned on Highway 12 in Kenwood Tuesday afternoon, briefly blocked traffic at about 1:30 p.m.

The accident occurred less than a block from the Kenwood Fire Station, and emergency crews were at the scene almost immediately.

It occurred when 60-year-old Kenwood resident, Harry Wiley, driving a Jeep Cherokee, was stopped in the northbound lane waiting to turn left onto Cypress Lane.

Cassandra Thompson, 34, of Glen Ellen, was also traveling northbound and failed to see Wiley’s Jeep. Her Mazda 3 struck the Jeep from behind at about 50-miles-per-hour, according to a CHP release, spinning it around and knocking it onto its side. The Mazda flipped upside down and came to rest pointing into the parking lot of the adjacent Sonoma Gallery building.

Both drivers had to be extricated by fire department personnel, but neither was seriously injured and both were treated and released on site.

Traffic was reduced to a single lane for more than half-an-hour before the vehicles were cleared from the road.
