The Classic Sports Racing Group will open its 47th season with the David Love Memorial Vintage Races tomorrow, Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6, at Sonoma Raceway.
Love, who passed away in 2013, was a longtime Bay Area resident and CSRG co-founder, who was instrumental in the growth of the organization, which has contributed more than $600,000 to the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway, through its race weekends.
Gracing the Valley’s 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course will be approximately 200 vintage and historic race cars, including Formula 1 cars, prototype and production sports cars principally from 1950s to 1970s, as well as some notable cars from the 1930s.
Included among the expected drivers competing in the event are former Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Lyn St. James and Formula Atlantic Champion Dan Marvin.
There will be eight vintage race groups competing in three races each on Saturday and Sunday, for a total of 24 races over the course of the weekend.
Spectators will also get full access to the cars and drivers in the paddock, and Sonoma Raceway’s Wine Country BBQ and Sears Point Taqueria will be open, and local craft beers, Sonoma Valley wines and Korbel Champagne will also be available for purchase.
Gates open at 8 a.m. each day and admission is $25 a day or $40 for a weekend pass, which includes parking and access to the paddock and all spectator areas. Children age 12-and-under, active and veteran military members, as well as high school and college students with appropriate identification, will be admitted free.
The CSRG returns to the Valley the weekend of Oct. 4 and 5, for the 10th annual CSRG Charity Challenge, which also benefits Speedway Children’s Charities. It will be the major events finale for Sonoma Raceway, which will open its 2014 Big O Tires season with the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival on May 17 and 18.
Then the Valley’s largest attended motorsports event, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 weekend, will be held on Friday through Sunday, June 20 to 22; followed by the annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals weekend July 25 through 27; and the NHRA Division 7 Drag Races July 18 through 20.
The IndyCar Series weekend is slated for Aug. 22 through 24; and the FIA World Touring Car Championship takes place from Sept. 20 to 21.
