More than 100 dancers will take the stage Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29, at the annual Sonoma Valley High School Spring Dance Showcase in the school’s Golton Hall. Performances will be at 7 p.m. both nights.
The theme of this year’s show is “A Night at the Movies,” and all of the musical selections have come from movies. The styles of dance the students will perform include jazz, hip-hop, salsa, swing, contemporary, rhythmic gymnastics, Irish step dance and lyrical.
The show will be a mixture of dance teacher Meredith Regan’s choreography, student choreography, as well as the choreography of two professional guest artists who worked with the students throughout the year.
Regan said the show begins with “The Flashmob.”
“It was a dance that the students learned in the fall and surprised their peers with on Halloween at lunchtime,” she said. “We have transformed this piece so that dancers will fill the hall including the bleachers, aisle-ways and stage to a medley of songs including “Thriller” and “Ghostbusters.”
The show will weave its way through recognizable movie music featuring songs from “Star Wars,” “Twilight,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Skyfall,” “Step Up,” and “Frozen” to name of few.
Dances range from large groups of more than 50 dancers to solos and duets.
The show includes a video short directed and filmed by junior Riley Scanlan and danced and choreographed by senior Ishqa Rousseau. Senior Linaya Dinoto will be singing live a song she wrote while senior Paige Giomi dances her own choreographic interpretation. Other student choreographers include sophomore Anika Ljung, sophomore Kylee Martindale, sophomore Lizette Hernandez, senior Ashlyn Skaggs, junior Morgan McCulley, sophomore Naomi Albertson and junior Nina Gjestad.
The show concludes with a highly energetic jazz piece, “Fame,” choreographed by Regan.
Tickets will be sold at the door beginning one hour prior to the event and are $5 for students and $10 general admission.
