Wine Country Weekend raises $1M for charities

The Sonoma Wine Country Weekend has been a highly successful fundraiser, taking in some $12 million in charitable donations since it was first established in 2008. But by any standard, 2013 was a banner year.

The proof of that came on Friday, when organizers presented a record-breaking, seven-figure check: $1,086,350 to be distributed among 44 Sonoma County charities.

“It’s the best day of the year,” said Squire Fridell, president of the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Foundation, which partners with Sonoma County Vintners to hold the Labor Day weekend fundraiser.

Friday’s celebratory event – featuring a luncheon and check presentation and attended by more than 100 wine industry leaders, nonprofit

organizers, local luminaries and major donors – was held at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa.
