Battling against the toughest opponents in the large North Coast Section, only one of Sonoma Valley High School’s five varsity wrestlers who competed in the weekend’s NCS championships in Newark survived Friday’s first day of action and advanced to Saturday’s consolation and championship rounds.

The six Dragon grapplers who qualified for the sectional with top-three finishes at the Sonoma County League championship tournament were seniors Harris Meglen and Max Schimm; junior Jack Biaggi; and sophomores Austin Beltran, Brandon Ruiz and Dalton Elster, who couldn’t wrestle because of a concussion.

Reaching Saturday’s advanced NCS matches were SCL title winner Meglen – Schimm and Elster were also league champions, while Biaggi, Beltran and Ruiz were third-place medalists – who was a ninth seed and compiled a 3-2 record with one pin and took home a top-12 finish at 115 pounds.

Schimm also posted a 3-2 record and ended with a top-16 finish at 147 pounds; Ruiz was 1-2 at 162; Beltran 1-2 at 182; and Biaggi 0-2 at 172.
