Vintage House senior center gets classical

The Alexander String Quartet returns to Sonoma on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Vintage House senior center at 3 p.m. The show will be the quartet’s seventh appearance in Sonoma since 2004, each time sponsored by the Sonoma Classical Music Society.

For Sunday’s show, the act will perform three quartets of Beethoven, spanning his chamber music output, opening with his String Quartet Op. 18, No. 4 in C minor, one of his six Op. 18 quartets written in 1799 to 1800; continuing with his String Quartet Op. 135 in F major, the last string quartet written by Beethoven, in 1826, and a distillation of all that he had learned and written about the string quartet; and concluding with the String Quartet Op. 59, No. 2 in E minor, written in 1806, the second of the three quartets he wrote for his patron, Count Razumovsky. It’s being called “Jazz and Cakes” and is a benefit for the Sonoma Valley High School Music Department, where there will be local and student performers throughout the event, which will be at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building on Sunday, Feb. 9. The day kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 1:30 p.m. featuring local jazz legends Mad and Eddie Duran, the band Shameless and a piano performance by Morgan Maudiere in addition to student performances. Tickets will be available at the door.

The Sonoma Community Center continues its winter concert series on Saturday, Feb. 8, starting at 7:30 p.m., with an appearance by Nathalie Tedrick and dancers from the highly selective Bellydance Superstars group. Tedrick is an actress-dancer-singer with a background in Shakespeare and training in several Hollywood acting studios. Tickets are available at the Sonoma Community Center box office or at the door, if available.

The Annex Wine Bar has Michael L. Castle for a solo show tonight, Feb. 7, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 it’s Acoustic Soul, also for a 7:30 p.m. show. There is no cover either night.
