Your mention last week in the “Remember When” column about the Navy leasing the Sonoma Mission Inn during World War II brought back some pleasant memories for me.
My uncle “Jan” was one of the last evacuees from the Philippines, and when I told him back in 1980 that I was moving to Sonoma, he told me how the Navy sent him to the Sonoma Mission Inn for some R&R, and that I should go there and look for his picture in the collection behind the bar.
Shortly after arriving in town, I paid a visit and sent him some pictures of the place. Needless to say, he said that the place was quite different from what he remembered from 40 years earlier.
Jan is gone now, but I wonder if any of the memorabilia from that time has been saved by the inn? It would be quite a collection – maybe for an exhibit at the museum?
