Having to deal with an incomplete lineup every time it takes the mat, the defending Sonoma County League champion Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestling team hosted its second straight home dual match to start the SCL season and evened its record with an inspiring win.

In Wednesday’s SCL dual match in Golton Hall, the Dragons got the best out of 11 grapplers, which added up to a well-earned 40-33 victory over El Molino.

Leading Sonoma past the visiting Lions were junior Jake Randuch's first-round pinning of David at 138 pounds; sophomore Dalton Elster’s win by way of a first-round pin over Vargas in the heavyweight division; freshman Noah Bartolome’s first-round pin-win over DeCarly at 145; senior co-captain Max Schimm’s 14-6 win over Ohlim at 170; senior co-captain Harris Meglen’s nail-biting 1-0 victory over Germini at 126; sophomore Austin Beltran’s 9-2 win over Mori at 195; sophomore Brandon Ruiz (160) and frosh Victor Vazquez’s (120) forfeit wins; junior Jack Biaggi’s 9-4 loss to Garza at 182; sophomore David Price’s second-round pin-loss to Wright at 145; and frosh Maclain Goertzen’s first-round pinning by Grajeda at 132.

The Dragons will compete in the annual and challenging King of the Mat Tournament in Windsor tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18.
