Sonoma boys trip up Trojans

After a rough go in the preseason, it’s been so far, so good in the more important Sonoma County League season for the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys, who are off to a 2-0 SCL start on the road.

Following their league-opening rout in Healdsburg last Tuesday, the Dragons found themselves emerged in a razor-tight SCL showdown at Petaluma Saturday night that went to the wire before they could secure a nail-biting 51-49 win.

“The team fought hard versus a very loud and boisterous Petaluma crowd. I was proud of our guys for their focus in the second half as we were shooting into the loud Petaluma student section,” said Sonoma coach Dennis Housman.

Leading visiting Sonoma past the Trojans were senior Jesse Summers’ game-high 26 points; junior Cyle Gusse’s 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocks; junior Ryan Wilbanks’ five points and four rebounds; unior Alex Gustafson’s four points; and senior Vinny Albano and junior Tristan Mertens’ two points and three rebounds each.

The Dragons wrap up their three-game road trip against league foe El Molino tonight in Forestville, before they return home to host Piner in an SCL game this Thursday, Jan. 16, in Pfeiffer Gym – freshmen start at 4:30, junior varsity play at 6, and the varsity tips off at 7:30 p.m.
