Traveling to the north end of the Monterey Bay for a big weekend of tournament mat action, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity wrestling team joined a 75-school field that participated in the highly competitive Coast Classic in Aptos, and, with nine grapplers, earned a respectable 26th-place finish.

Pacing the Dragons were senior Harris Meglen’s top-16 finish with a 4-2 record and two pins at 120 pounds; senior Max Schimm’s 3-2 top-16 with one pin at 152; freshman Noah Bartolome’s 2-2 at 145; sophomore Dalton Elster’s 1-2 in the heavyweight division; sophomore Austin Beltran’s 1-2 at 170; sophomore Brandon Ruiz’s 1-2 at 170; frosh Jackson Goertzen’s 1-2 at 126; junior Jack Biaggi’s 0-2 at 160; and sophomore David Price’s 0-2 at 145.

Sonoma’s wrestlers will compete in the Demolition Day Tournament at AA Staggs High School in Stockton this Saturday, Jan. 4, before the defending Sonoma County League champion Dragons open their SCL season hosting longtime rival Healdsburg at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, in Golton Hall.
