Strong showing for shorthanded Sonoma

Knowing that without a complete weight-class lineup, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestlers will be challenged in each dual they compete in this season but that won’t change their approach or determination in each match.

With only half the 14-wrestler lineup, seven Dragons combined for a strong overall 28-7 record at Saturday’s annual Healdsburg Duals, and, despite the multiple forfeitures in their five head-to-head team duals, they were able to finish with a solid 3-2 tournament mark.

Leading the Sonoma grapplers were four-year varsity starters seniors Harris Meglen and Max Schimm, and junior Jake Randuch, who were dominating in going unbeaten and capturing first-place weight-class finishes; while junior Giacomo Biaggi, sophomore Dalton Elster and freshman Noah Bartolome each claimed second place.

In their gold-medal performances, the Dragons’ Meglen posted a 5-0 record with two pins at 126 pounds; Schimm went 5-0 with two pins at 152; and Randuch’s 5-0 with two pins at 145.

Taking home Sonoma’s silver medals were Elster’s 4-1 with four pins in the heavyweight division; Biaggi’s 4-1 record with one pin at 160 pounds; and Bartolome’s 4-1 with three pins at 145; while sophomore Austin Beltran finished 1-4 in the tough 170-pound bracket
