SONOMA RACEWAY RECENTLY announced its 2014 major events schedule, which will be again highlighted by NASCAR, NHRA, IndyCar and World Touring weekends. Historic car racing opens and closes Sonoma Raceway’s 2014 major event season with the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival on May 17 and 18, and the Oct. 4 and 5 Classic Sports Racing Group Charity Challenge. The popular NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 weekend takes place Friday through Sunday, June 20 to 22, followed by back-to-back drag-racing weekends, highlighted by the 27th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals the weekend of July 25 through 27, which are preceded by the NHRA Division 7 Drag Races July 18 through 20. Making its 10th appearance will be the IndyCar Series, featuring the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, taking place the weekend of Aug. 22 through 24, followed by the third consecutive appearance of the FIA World Touring Car Championship from Sept. 20 to 21. SONOMA VALLEY HIGH School’s seventh annual Dragon Hall of Fame banquet and ceremony will be held for the third straight year at Hanna Boys Center, Arnold Drive and Aqua Caliente Road, on Saturday, May 10, 2014. The Dragon Hall of Fame 2014 class includes longtime track and field coach Sherman Harris accepting the D.A. Pfeiffer Coaches Award, and Margaret Cunningham receiving the Mulas Family Recognition Award, which is named for the late Schellville fire chief and dairy farmer, Mitch Mulas. Individual athletes being inducted into the Dragon Hall of Fame are John Koeberer for the 1960s; John Litzenberg and Alexis Howell for the 1980s; Bobbie O’Gorman, Richard Davison and Veronica Perez for the 1990s; and Melissa Van Paris for the 2000s. Sonoma’s “team of the decade” being honored is the 1984 Dragons’ football squad.
