It's been a busy, action-packed two early weeks in the 2013-14 schedule for Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity basketball girls, who played a second straight weekend tourney and eight nonleague games in 11 days.
On the heels of finishing in second place in their own Dragon Classic the weekend before, the Lady Dragons played Miramonte’s Mats Tournament, with a neutral tourney format, over the weekend at different sites and ended up having a tough go with three consecutive losses to three good teams.
In last Thursday's opening round, the Lady Dragons lost 61-37 to a strong Clayton Valley Charter team, then dropped a 50-39 second-round decision to a good Foothill squad on Friday, before falling 47-30 to Arcata in Saturday's final round.
Pacing Sonoma in its loss to Clayton Valley Charter were Delaney Swanson’s 12 points and eight rebounds; junior Mackenzie Albrecht’s six points and five rebounds; junior Ciara Smith’s three points and six rebounds; three points each by juniors Laryssa Baker, Alexa Hall and Sierra Lilly; sophomore Bella Bollman’s two points and three steals; and senior Megan Neely’s two points and senior Maddie Burningham’s one.
Against Foothill, the Lady Dragons were paced by Albrecht’s double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals; Hall’s nine points on three treys; Swanson’s eight points and eight rebounds; Smith’s four points and seven rebounds; and junior Hanna Lemaire’s two points.
Pacing the Sonoma girls against Arcata were Swanson’s 14 points and eight rebounds; Albrecht’s double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds; and Lemaire’s four points and Bollman and senior Giana Monterosso’s two apiece.
The Lady Dragons will play Justin-Siena in Napa this Saturday night, Dec. 21, before making their annual holiday trek to Arizona to compete in the challenging Cactus Jam in Tempe from Friday through Monday, Dec. 27 to 30.
