At Saturday’s Sonoma County League championship meets on the Spring Lake 3.08-mile course in Santa Rosa, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity cross-country boys tried to run down first-place Piner, while fending off an Analy team running hot on their tail in the race for the SCL title.
Despite improving on their losing dual-meet season effort, the Dragons couldn’t overtake Piner, which cruised to the SCL title, but they did edge out Analy in the race for second place, and rounding out final boys’ league standings were fourth-place Petaluma, followed by Healdsburg, Elsie Allen and El Molino.
Earning top-10-finishing medals for the Dragon boys were senior Owen Ljung’s fourth-place finish in 16 minutes, 17 seconds; and senior Keegan Ginter’s 10th place in 16:49, with senior Christian Martinez just missing a medal at 11th.
Sonoma was also paced by freshman Leonardo Macedonio’s 20th in 17:34; junior Ian Sloop’s 21st in 17:38; junior Return Bongiovanni’s 31st in 18:71; and sophomore Trevor Martinelli’s 37th in 19:11.
Piner ended up making it a league-title sweep by also winning the SCL girls’ championship, followed in the final standings by Analy, Petaluma, Healdsburg, Sonoma and El Molino.
