Sonoma Valley High’s hopes for a home playoff game may have been dashed Friday night as the Petaluma kicker nailed a 32-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game to hand the Dragons a 24-21 loss.
The Trojans, who needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, struck first and the Dragons found themselves down 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Sonoma evened the score as quarterback Dan Deely scored two touchdowns on the ground – one in each of the second and third quarters.
Petaluma took a 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but Deely found Kyle Dunevent in the end zone with less than three minutes to go for the tying touchdown. Petaluma marched back down the field and called a timeout with three seconds to go. The Trojans trotted their field goal kicker on and the ensuing field goal sunk the Dragons.
Sonoma finishes its regular season with a 7-3 record and 4-2 in league play. The Dragons will find out Sunday who their opponent is in the North Coast Section playoffs.
