Dragon gridders drub Elsie in home finale

Favored to comfortably cruise toward a fourth straight Sonoma County League victory in their Friday night home finale at Arnold Field, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity football boys instantly established defensive control over Elsie Allen and scored a quick touchdown – but then the offense sputtered.

Leading just 7-0 after one quarter, the Dragons righted their offensive course and tallied four second-quarter touchdowns for a dominating 34-0 halftime lead, before exchanging third-quarter end-zone visits with Elsie Allen for a 41-6 advantage early in the second half.

Sonoma’s gridders then proceeded to tack on two more touchdowns en route to their 55-6 drubbing of the visiting Lobos.

With everyone on the team seeing action and contributing, Sonoma had seven players score touchdowns, including two on 27- and 4-yard runs, respectively, by senior quarterback Dan Deely, who also passed for three touchdowns to junior Tristan Mertens for 10 yards, senior Ed Pomeroy for 55 yards, and senior Mitch Hood for 4 yards, while senior Austin Bailey ran one in from 56 yards out.

After taking over the quarterback duties from Deely in the third quarter, Hood tossed a pair of touchdowns to junior Kyle Dunevent for 10 yards, and to senior Hank Anderson for 18 yards, with junior place-kicker Noe Baron booting five extra points, and Mertens adding two extra-point kicks.
