Lady Dragons drop marathon to Petaluma

It was a volleyball match that turned into a marathon clash between two longtime Sonoma County League rivals that seemed like it would never end.

In Wednesday night’s SCL and regular-season finale in Pfeiffer Gym, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity volleyball girls, who recently clinched their third straight SCL title and had won all their previous 11 league matches, while dropping only one set, ran into a pumped-up Petaluma team looking to upset the unbeaten run.

After dominating the first set for a 25-16 win, the Lady Dragons were pulling away in the second set when visiting Petaluma made its first of numerous rallies in the match to pulled out a 25-22 decision.

Sonoma, which squeaked out a 25-23 third-set victory, still couldn’t shake the Trojan girls, who captured the fourth set 25-22 to send the match into the fifth and deciding set, which is usually played to 15.

But not on this night, when both teams had numerous chances to win in a tense, seesaw battle that finally ended with Petaluma shocking the Lady Dragons with a 27-25 set and match win.
