Sonoma’s 1st-place soccer boys trip Trojans, girls fall in regular season finale

Entering the week with three matches remaining in the regular season and tied for first place in the Sonoma County League, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys played their final road match and made it a winner Wednesday night at Durst Field in Petaluma.

When defending champion frontrunner Analy lost to Elsie Allen last Friday, the Dragons joined them at the top of the standings and remained on course for an outright or shared SCL title with their 3-2 triumph over longtime rival Petaluma.

Leading the Dragons to the pivotal win were seniors Brian Ruiz’s and Anthony García’s one goal scored and one assist each, and senior Alejandro Echeverría’s one tallied goal.

The Dragon boys will host two challenging league opponents standing in the way of claiming the SCL title, facing now second-place Elsie Allen at 4 p.m. today on the high school field, and a big re-scheduled showdown with visiting Analy this Halloween Thursday, Oct. 31.

In their first meetings, the Dragons nipped Elsie Allen 1-0, but were edged 3-1 on two long-kicked second-half goals by Analy after controlling the tempo of play for most of the match.
