El Verano Elementary School is making a big push to create more opportunities for its students to be active both at school and in their daily lives.

Mike Wallace, an intervention teacher at the school, stepped forward eight years ago to help run a lunch-time sports program for the school’s fourth- and fifth-graders. His popular flag football program is currently underway and is being expanded to the third grade.

El Verano recently completed its annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser, which over the years has earned more than $40,000 for the school’s Outdoor Education programs.

According to Principal Maite Iturri, this year, 475 participants ran more than 10,000 laps on the school fields and secured $13,000 in pledges.
