Dragon soccer boys hold off Petaluma

Despite dominating the action, with numerous offensive runs, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys held only a slim 1-0 halftime lead over longtime Sonoma County League rival Petaluma Friday afternoon at the high school field.

In the second half, the same scenario started playing out with the Dragons rushing Petaluma’s net with early scoring chances until senior Brian Ruiz scored his second goal of the match for a 2-nil advantage.

Then Sonoma’s offense went stagnant and the visiting Trojans started mounting attacks until they scored a goal and put them in a solid position to draw even.

But the defense stood fast and the Dragons – who continued to play without the services of injured all-league senior offensive standout Alejandro Echeverría – held on for a 2-1 SCL triumph.

Assisting on Ruiz’s two goals were senior Paco Martínez and sophomore Edwin Reyes as the Sonoma boys face league foe Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 2, before hosting SCL rival Piner at 4 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 4, at the high school field.
