Cornelius “Con” Murphy died Aug. 24, 2013, in Sonoma. He was 84.
Born and raised in San Francisco’s Noe Valley, Mr. Murphy graduated from St. James High School in 1946. After attending City College of San Francisco, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Japan and Korea during that conflict.

He joined the San Francisco Police Department, rising through the ranks to the position of Chief of Police, retiring in 1986 after 34 years of service.After retirement, Mr. Murphy served as a volunteer docent at the Año Nuevo Reserve and pursued his interests in fishing, golf, bird-watching, woodworking and wood turning.He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; and his four children, Noreen, Sheila, Neil (Christy) and Eileen (Wayne). Other survivors include his brother, Daniel (Claudine); his brother, Donald; and sister-in-law, Beverly Dennehy; grandchildren, Cassie, Pat and Matt; and many nieces and nephews.Friends were invited to a vigil at Duggan’s Mission Chapel, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013. A visitation was held on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Committal services and entombment will be held on Friday, Aug. 30, at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.Donations to the charity of your choice are preferred by the family.Duggan’s Mission Chapel525 W.
