Culinary students gain hands on experience

Sonoma Valley High School’s Culinary Department supplements in-class instruction with hands-on work experience. Over the past several weeks, the students have catered a number of events on campus, including the recent brunch for the volunteers of the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation’s Teacher Support Network. In March, the students entered the Sonoma County Lodging Association’s high school culinary competition, where each school is paired with a local chef. Sonoma students paired up with Dana Jaffe and Sanjeev Singh from Saddles at MacArthur Place. “They were very generous with their time and great with my students,” said new culinary department head Jonathan Beard.  Advanced culinary students, from left, seniors Alex Gruber, Sherylyn Myers, Annabelle Avila, Rich Denning, Kaitlyn Boldt, Che Sanchez-Leader and Jacob Bolman (in front) prepared and served brunch to TSN volunteers earlier this month.
