Sonoma swimmers sink Piner, tennis boys swept by Analy, finale today at El Mo

Both impressive and overwhelming in their Sonoma County League dual-meet efforts, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity boys and girls swim teams coasted past Piner for one-sided victories last Thursday in Santa Rosa.

While the Sonoma boys sunk the Prospectors 82-64, the Lady Dragons swept every single event in their dual en route to a 114-21 pummeling of Piner.

Leading Sonoma’s girl swimmers were the triumphant 200-yard medley relay team of senior Gina Peil, sophomores Natalie Baker and Annie Greenslade, and freshman Cameron Taggesell in 2 minutes, 26.68 seconds; the winning 200 freestyle relay team of Peil, Taggesell, senior Maria Hawing and junior Amanda Gillion in 2:09.41; and the first-place 400 free relay team of Gillion, Hawing, Baker and sophomore Briana Lehane in 5:15.43.

The Lady Dragons were also led by Peil’s 50 and 100 free first-place finishes in 29.75 and 1:14.74, respectively; Gillion’s 200 individual medley (IM) and 100 butterfly first places in 2:45.60 and 1:17.30, respectively; Hawing’s 100 backstroke first in 1:29.84 and 50 free second in 30.94; sophomore Nathalie Vega’s 200 free first in 2:55.61 and 500 free second in 8:24.84; Baker’s 100 breast-stroke first in 1:38.51 and 200 IM third in 3:04.32; Greenslade’s 500 free first in 8:23.25 and 50 free third in 35.15; Lehane’s 100 and 200 free seconds in 1:22.23 and 2:57.80, respectively; Taggesell’s 200 IM and 100 fly seconds in 3:01.50 and 1:35.36, respectively; junior Raegen Hedley’s 100 breast second in 2:02.08 and 500 free third in 8:43.06; and frosh Jasmine Johnstone’s 100 back second in 1:41.81 and 100 free third in 1:28.54.

Leading the Sonoma boys, who were without one of their top swimmers, sophomore Cian Lacy, were the victorious 200 medley relay team of juniors Adam Curry and Rick Taggesell, and sophomores Jack Lewis and Max Sheppard in 2:03.43; the triumphant 200 free relay team of  Sheppard, Lewis, Curry and sophomore Jacob Paine in 1:55.35; Curry’s 50 and 200 free first places in 26.06 and 2:14.27, respectively; Lewis’ 500 free and 100 breast firsts in 6:38.20 and 1:15.53, respectively; and frosh Jackson Mighell’s 100 free first in 1:05.70 and 200 free third in 2:22.91.
