Get your drag on at Sonoma Raceway

Tires squealed Wednesday for Sonoma Raceway’s “Wednesday Night Drags,” a yearly program giving amateur racers – or really just anybody – access to the Valley’s famous quarter-mile drag strip.

The event, now in its 26th year, is held most Wednesday evenings beginning in March and ending Nov. 12.

According to organizers, it “gives people a safe, legal and controlled environment in which to drag race their vehicles, as opposed to using city streets or back-county roads.”

Then there’s “drifting,” a maneuver popularized by the “Fast and Furious” movie series. For the drifters, Sonoma Raceway is offering “Sonoma Drift,” held concurrently behind the main grandstand.

Either activity is open to anyone with a driver’s license and a car that passes a basic inspection. Drag racing costs $25 (or $15 for high school students with a valid high school ID), and is available for on-site registration.
