Sonoma son, and my old Sonoma Valley High School schoolmate, John Koeberer, was inducted as a member of the 2014 class of the California Outdoors Hall of Fame at the International Sportsmen’s Exposition last month.
John, who lives over in Calistoga now, operates The California Parks Company, which handles visitor services for Shasta/Trinity National Forest, Lassen Volcanic National Park and numerous federal, state, county and local parks and marinas across California. He was recognized for his leadership in outdoor recreation, innovations that he has championed in concession management and his humanitarian efforts.
Among them, he is an advocate of conscious capitalism within his company and awards his managers for their achievements in community service.
John was recently inducted into the Dragon Hall of Fame for playing on SVHS tennis teams in the 1960s that won four consecutive league championships. During his high school years, he was SVHS's first international exchange student, traveling to Norway.
We’re in the midwinter fishing doldrums right now, and only the hardiest and craziest anglers head out. That said, there are a few good places to fish close to home and including the North Bay, where sturgeon and striped bass can be caught from the Pump House to China Camp.
