Common Core math community meeting

The Common Core State Standards in mathematics have generated both excitement and concern in Sonoma.

From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the Altimira Middle School Multipurpose Room, the Sonoma Valley Unified School District will host a discussion led by Dr. Patrick Callahan on the differences between the Common Core and the previous California State Standards; on what the new expectations for students are and on what it means to be mathematically proficient in the 21st century.

Superintendent Louann Carlomagno explained, “As we continue to transition to the Common Core, we hope to be able to engage parents and our community in discussions about how to best implement these more rigorous standards and prepare all students for college and career.”

Childcare, light snacks and translation will be available.

Callahan is the statewide co-director of the California Mathematics Project.
