Sonoma teen wins Best in Show at Santa Rosa Dog Show

Sonoma teen Hannah Breall is an avid junior exhibitor competing at International All Breed Canine Association Dog shows across the United States.

Last month, at the 25th anniversary International Dog Show in Santa Rosa, Breall’s beagle competed with several dogs, and won Best of Show Veteran Dog; double Best of Show Companion Dog; Best Junior Exhibitor; and Best of Breed Puppy.

Breall spends 10-to-20 hours a week exercising her beagles, attending clinics and training a variety of dogs for competition. At any given time, she has between five and seven dogs living with her family on their property off lower Broadway. Over the past year, Breall has had the opportunity to show and/or work with dobermans, bull terriers, American staffordshire terriers, bearded collies, havanese, corgis, pugs and beagles. She credits her mentor, Tracy Olson of Cabaret Beagles and Paw Prints Grooming in Sonoma, with teaching her the ins-and-outs of showing dogs.

Next up for her are dog shows in San Jose, Vallejo, Sacramento and then maybe Las Vegas during her spring break from high school.

Beyond the success she has enjoyed showing her dogs, Breall finds her work with therapy dogs and service dogs to be most gratifying. “Dogs can change lives,” she explained. “My personal dog, Blondie, is training to be a reading-therapy dog, but eventually I would like to do crisis work with her. This is where the therapy dog is brought in to comfort those who have suffered a great tragedy, or to comfort children while officials speak with their parents during a crisis like a fire.” Breall also hopes to get involved in training and placing service dogs with kids with developmental disabilities

When she is not preparing for and competing in dog shows, Breall is a freshman at Sonoma Academy. Before the end of high school, she hopes to compete with one of her dogs at the renowned Westminster Kennel Show in New York.
