Sonoma boys mauled by Tigers

Having beaten four of five teams in the first half of the 12-game Sonoma County League season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys were only one game out of first place and had the opportunity last Thursday in Pfeiffer Gym to host the one SCL team they had left to play.

Unfortunately, it was first-place defending champion Analy, which didn’t waste any time in showing why it’s won a string of SCL titles by using the depth, talent and athleticism that separates it from the rest of the seven-team league to race out to a 14-5 first-quarter lead and never letting the Dragons back into the game.

After their early game dominance, the visiting Tigers remained aggressive at both ends of the court and coasted to a 53-30 win over the Sonoma boys, who were paced by senior Jesse Summers’ 11 points and three rebounds; senior Vinny Albano’s five points and four steals; junior Noe Baron’s four points and four rebounds; senior Andy Chavez’s four points; junior Ryan Wilbanks’ two points and three rebounds; juniors Thomas Crumly and Trevor Welch’s two points each; and ; junior Tristan Mertens’ three steals.

With the loss, the Dragons have a 4-2 record after the first half of SCL play and, after tonight’s bye, will have the daunting task of facing Analy in a quick rematch to begin the final league six-game stretch at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 30, in Sebastopol, followed by a return home to host El Molino Tuesday, Feb. 4.
