Dragon wrestlers open in Golton

Opening their 2013-14 schedule with a nonleague, nonscored tri-meet, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestlers hosted Justin-Siena of Napa and the Valley’s Archbishop Hanna High School last Thursday night in Golton Hall.

With a mix of bouts involving grapplers from all three teams, the Dragons won a majority of their matches, with the Hanna Hawks, who are only in their third year of having a wrestling program, fielding their largest squad yet, making a good showing.

In the wake of losing seven contributing seniors, including four Sonoma County League champions and North Coast Section medalists, with one state qualifier, to graduation, the Dragons will have to defend their SCL title with an incomplete lineup of only 12 wrestlers.

But current seniors and four-year varsity standouts Harris Meglen and Max Schimm anchor a young team with enthusiasm and talent, which will be up to the challenge assisting Sonoma in overcoming multiple dual-match forfitures and contend to repeat as league champs.
