Lady Dragons dusted by Napa

After dominating the action en route to a convincing season-opening win over a team a division lower than them, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity basketball girls faced a higher division team Tuesday night in Pfeiffer Gym and found themselves on the wrong side of a one-sided decision.

From the opening tap, the Lady Dragons found themselves floundering to find some offense through a first half that saw them make only one field goal against a tough Napa team, which got some major payback avenging last year's loss with a runaway 52-26 victory in the annual nonleague battle between the two schools.

Pacing Sonoma were junior Ciara Smith’s six points, 11 rebounds and one blocked shot; junior Mackenzie Albrecht’s five points and 10 rebounds; junior Delaney Swanson's five points and three rebounds; senior Megan Neely’s two points and five rebounds; junior Alexis Hall and sophomore Bella Bollman’s three points each, and junior Laryssa Baker’s two; junior Shelby Camilleri’s four rebounds and one block; and senior Maddie Burningham's three rebounds.

Rounding out the varsity Lady Dragons’ roster – directed by head coach Sil Coccia and assistant coaches Steve Semenero, Dino Minatta and Sheila Brady – are senior Giana Monterosso and juniors Hanna Lemaire and Sierra Lilly.

The Sonoma varsity girls are currently hosting their 17th annual Dragon Classic, which started last night and continues this afternoon and evening, with the tournament ending tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 7, in Pfeiffer Gym.
