Sonoma boy runners 11th in NCS

Following their dual-meet regular season and Sonoma County League championship meets with SCL second- and fifth-place finishes, respectively, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity cross-country boys and girls ran into the postseason, where they raced against their sectional division’s best.

On Saturday at Hayward High School’s three-mile course, the Dragon runners – directed by head coach John Litzenberg and assistant coach Julie Niehaus – competed in the North Coast Section Division-3 championship meets, where the season ended with Sonoma’s boys in the middle of the pack and the girls incomplete.

In the NCS Division-3 boys’ race, with 24 teams represented by 149 finishers, the Dragons, without their No. 2 runner, earned a respectable 11th place.

Pacing the Dragon boys, individually, were senior Keegan Ginter’s 42nd place in a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds; senior Owen Ljung’s 51st in 17:11; junior Ian Sloop’s 71st in 17:53; freshman Leonardo Macedonio’s 72nd in 17:53; and junior Return Bongiovanni: 102nd in 18:41.

Racing in an NCS Division-3 girls’ field of 108 runners, the young Lady Dragons were paced by sophomore Maddy Libbey’s 65th-place finish in 21:23; frosh Maddie Cashel’s 72nd in 22:11; and frosh Crystal Rodriguez’s 107th in 26:22.
